Six things this filter is certified to reduce
A high-density coconut carbon block pulls contaminants out of the water without choking your fridge's water pressure. What comes out of the dispenser is water you can taste the difference in.
- LeadA heavy metal that leaches from older plumbing
- PharmaceuticalsTrace drug compounds that survive treatment
- ChlorineThe taste and odor municipal water is treated with
- VOCsVolatile organic compounds from industrial runoff
- PesticidesAgricultural residue carried into the supply
- Micro-impuritiesFine particulate you would rather not drink
Why the Smart Chip version is the one to buy
GE moved the XWFE to an RFID-enabled design for a reason. Here is what that buys you.
The filter talks to your refrigerator
The integrated RFID Smart Chip communicates with your GE fridge automatically. It confirms the correct filter is fitted, verifies the installation seated properly, and lets the fridge monitor filtration performance over the life of the cartridge. A filter without the chip cannot do any of that.
Gallons per cartridge
Roughly six months of normal household use before the fridge asks for a change.
Carbon block, not loose granules
High-density coconut carbon gives the water more contact area to pass through, so more is absorbed and pressure at the dispenser stays where it was.
Fits the whole XWFE range
Designed for every GE refrigerator that calls for an XWFE cartridge, so you do not need to cross-reference your model number.
Installation
Swapped in less than a minute
No tools, no shutoff valve, no plumber. If you can turn a doorknob you can fit this filter.
-
Twist the old cartridge out
Turn it counter-clockwise a quarter turn and pull. A small amount of water will drip, which is normal.
-
Twist the XWFE in
Line it up, push, and turn clockwise until it locks. The twist-lock fitting only seats one way, so you cannot get it wrong.
-
Let the chip check itself in
Run about half a gallon through the dispenser to clear the air. The Smart Chip registers with the fridge and resets the filter life indicator on its own.
Genuine XWFE against a generic cartridge
The difference is not the plastic housing. It is what the fridge can and cannot verify once the filter is in.

Questions people ask before buying
Will this fit my refrigerator?
If your GE refrigerator calls for an XWFE cartridge, this fits. Check the label inside the fridge door or the existing filter you are replacing. XWFE also supersedes the older XWF in GE models designed for the chipped version.
What does the Smart Chip actually do?
It is an RFID tag built into the cartridge. Your fridge reads it to confirm the right filter is installed, to check the cartridge seated correctly, and to monitor filtration performance across the six month life. Filters without the chip cannot report any of this back.
How long does one filter last?
Up to 170 gallons or six months, whichever comes first. For most households that works out to roughly two changes a year, which is why the multi-packs are priced around coverage rather than units.
Do I need tools or a plumber?
Neither. It is a twist-and-lock fitting: quarter turn to release the old one, quarter turn to seat the new one, then flush about half a gallon through the dispenser to clear trapped air.
Is it certified?
Yes. The XWFE meets NSF/ANSI standards and is certified to reduce lead, pharmaceuticals, chlorine taste and odor, VOCs, pesticides and micro-impurities.
Will it reduce my water pressure?
It should not. The carbon block is high-density coconut carbon chosen specifically to hold absorption capacity without restricting flow, so dispenser pressure stays where it was.
